  1. You can find me on Mastodon at https://sunny.garden/@specialagentCK. I somewhat reluctantly set up that account during my last time taking this course! I had previously been a serious Twitter and Instagram user, both of which led to genuinely meaningful interactions and opportunities. Like many people, I was disappointed by what happened to Twitter, and shocked by the speed of its decline. I do still find Instagram a positive experience in many ways (particularly in relation to the work I do in the arts), but it is not the same. I couldn’t ever really find a Mastodon home that felt right for me, in terms of recreating the sorts of interactions I had on Twitter — but that is probably in part because I prioritised the art side of things since that is what I predominantly use social media for these days. I know this is something I should probably tackle, but, as I said during my last run through the course, I really lack the enthusiasm and energy anymore. I do find it interesting that I now do much more in-person networking than ever before; I realise this isn’t necessarily great for expanding reach or diversity (especially in the SW of England!), but for someone who is highly introverted it is actually a huge step forward! Overall, I find that I am increasingly preferring analog, embodied ways of doing things because these help create balance given how much time I am forced to be sat at a computer these days…

  2. I opened my Mastodon account three days before this post appeared, and I’m going to work with it.

When Brazil blocked Twitter, most of the Brazilian academics I followed went to Bluesky, along with other friends, so it’s the only network I’ve been using much. I’ve seen that Mastodon and Bluesky accounts can be connected, so I’m going to spend more time on Mastodon from now on.

  3. on Mastodon – https://pkm.social/@shirleyr
(If I access Mastodon, I’ve tend to lurk and read but not engage much. I am not much on social media.)

URL for “According to Brian Uzzi” is an HBR article. I am not a subscriber. Here is an alternative URL for the full article – https://web.archive.org/web/20180516200420/https://hbr.org/2018/05/go-ahead-skip-that-networking-event

FWIW, I use – https://www.removepaywall.com/ – described as “Remove Paywall works by allowing users to search various internet archives. These archived pages do not require a login and prevent users from being tracked.”
